The Federation is a membership-based Charity set up to support its locally based and independent Members who develop and provide mental health services in their community. We formed ourselves as a result of a Forum organised by the Matthew Trust in the House of Lords in February 1996. More than 120 representatives of 86 agencies attended and agreed that the Federation should be formed. As many again wrote in with support after that meeting, and we now have 239 voting and associate members who in total represent more than 150,000 service users in the UK.
